Market America LLC, a privately held company, was founded in 1992 by James Ridinger. The company is marketing nutritional supplements, cosmetics, personal-care, pet-care, auto-care and communications products, and electronics through a web portal and 180,000 independent sales representatives. Market America is based in Greensboro, NC, and posted 2008 sales of $282 million.
Market America Business Model and Marketing
Market America is marketing its products through three types of distributors:
- Sales Representative
- Independent Distributor
- UnFranchise Owner
A Sales Representative submits an Independent Distributor Application and Agreement without paying a subscription fee, and can buy products at wholesale for personal use or retailing. Retailing profits range from 23% to 50% of the retail price.
An Independent Distributor pays a subscription fee of $ 129.95 plus 200BV of products (1BV is about $1.25), and participates in the Management Performance Compensation Plan (MPCP), to earn Commissions and Management Bonuses. There is an annual renewal fee of $95 and monthly purchase requirement starting from 50BV and 10IBV Internet Business Volume (from purchases from Internet partner stores).
An UnFranchise Owner is a qualified and active Distributor who has joined the theUnFranchise® Business Development System with a minimum 12 month commitment. The financial involvement is to buy the UFO Business Support Materials Kit for $200 with a quarterly renewal of $75, plus quarterly fees and purchase, sales and earnings requirements.
An UnFranchise Owner must requalify every quarter. Under the UFO program, this requires participating in or conducting a number of company sponsored training courses, purchasing tickets to company events, presenting the Business Plan at least once per week, recruiting 2 new distributors and making at least $900 in commissions.
The minimal product purchase and sales requirements per quarter are as follows:
- 300BV product purchases
- 30IBV Internet product purchases
- 900BV personal product sales
Market America Compensation Plan
Market America uses a binary compensation plan, where you are building two legs in your Business Development Center (BDC). Commissions are paid out weekly in steps, as the leg with smallest volume reaches certain targets:

Your volume accumulates for up to a year, until it is flushed. The maximum weekly check you can receive is $3,600. When your BDC reaches the maximum threshold (both legs at or above 5000BV), you are given a new BDC that you can place into your organization for an additional $3,600 per week.
Customer and Recruiting Targets
Assuming a 30BV monthly volume per customer and 100BV per distributor, your organization needs to have
- 6 active distributors with a total of 60 Preferred Customers for $300 payout, and
- 25 active distributors with a total of 250 Preferred Customers for $1,500 payout.
Market America Training
Market America offers required training in the New Distributor Training, the "Basic Five" (attitude & knowledge, goals, retailing, recruiting & sponsoring, follow-up & duplication) and the National Meeting Training Seminar System. A special schedule of training events under the name of "Market America University" is open to UnFranchise Owners only.
The training in marketing is driven by Market America's One-on-One marketing philosophy, and focuses on warm market and personal contact strategies. As a new distributor, you will receive a 90 Day Action Plan with assignments, to align yourself with the Market America Business Model.
Market America Opportunity and Review Summary
Market America is an established company with strong sales, and a range of valid products. Through its "Mall without Walls" web portal and customer surveys, the company is working to assess customer needs and market trends, and capitalize on these with new products.
